Why does my stereo sound distorted when I turn the volume too high?
OK, I have a vintage, 40 watt 1992 Kenwood reciever, model KR-A4040 (excuuuse me for calling this vintage… I’m 22 lol.. the damn thing was made when i was in Kindergarten, and I call that vintage), and I have some nice Jensen speakers that I bought at A&B Sound when they were having a huge closing out sale.
The volume goes up to 30, but when I crank it past 20, it sounds really distorted and shitty. So getting to my question, if you turn the volume up past a certain point and it gets distorted, is it the reciever or the speakers?
Another thing, I have a wicked cool awesome mid ’70s Craig FM/8 track player (4 watts… YES 4 WATTS!) in my extremely awesome vintage classic 1974 Ford LTD, and when i turn the volume up half way, it gets really distorted. Again, amp, or speakers?
Hi there.
You don’t say what the capacity of the speakers is – it is usually printed on the back. It sounds like your amp is killing your speakers, they may only be 20W. As a general rule I would buy speakers twice as powerful as my amp to avoid this problem – my Denon amp does 40W per channel, but my Sharp reflex speakers do 80W.
