Must have Software for your Windows XP or Vista Computer

Keeping your computer clean and free of unwanted software can be challenging. When you are online, your computer is constantly collecting data from the internet and some of it can be harmful and cause serious problems. Computer Virus

These can be easily avoided if you have the correct software installed. Over the years, I have found many different types of software to help keep your PC running smoothly and some that claim to help... Big difference.

Anti-Virus Programs

If you have Norton or McAfee Anti-virus products, chances are your computer isn't as protected as you think. These programs can use an enormous amount of your system's resources and those are resources you need. The best anti-virus program I have found is actually the free version of AVG. It updates automatically, scans on a schedule that you can modify and has found more viruses than any other program I have used. Click Here to download AVG Free

Anti-Spyware

Spyware is computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user's interaction with the computer, without the user's informed consent.

While the term spyware suggests software that secretly monitors the user's behavior, the functions of spyware extend well beyond simple monitoring. Spyware programs can collect various types of personal information, but can also interfere with user control of the computer in other ways, such as installing additional software, redirecting Web browser activity, accessing websites blindly that will cause more harmful viruses, or diverting advertising revenue to a third party. Spyware can even change computer settings, resulting in slow connection speeds, different home pages, and loss of Internet or other programs. In an attempt to increase the understanding of spyware, a more formal classification of its included software types is captured under the term privacy-invasive software.

In response to the emergence of spyware, a small industry has sprung up dealing in anti-spyware software. Running anti-spyware software has become a widely recognized element of computer security best practices for Microsoft Windows desktop computers. A number of jurisdictions have passed anti-spyware laws, which usually target any software that is surreptitiously installed to control a user's computer.

The best Anti-Spyware program I have found is another free application called Spyware Doctor. This program automatically updates, scans and removes nasty programs from your computer. You can only get the free version from the Google Pack.

Junk Files

Over time, your computer collects all kinds of temporary files from the internet and from day to day use. These can quickly add up and cause problems which can be resolved with the correct software. A great "all in one" program to use is called Ace Utilities. This program is a 30 day free trial with full function ability. If you choose to buy this program, let me know and I can get it for a reduced cost. *Be careful with the advanced features. If you are not familiar with this program, use the built in Wizard for the best results.

Also make sure you run your Disk Defragment utility supplied by Windows. You can find it under accessories, system tools from your start menu. This can also increase system performance if used frequently.
